Sex Therapy For Men In Colorado Springs
Sex therapy for men can be a transformative experience, in which you have the opportunity to feel understood, validated, and helped with your sexual health concerns, fantasies, performance anxiety, and erectile concerns.
YOU’RE NOT ALONE
The vast majority of men will experience a sexual health issue at some point in their lives. Erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, performance anxiety, and low sexual desire are all common concerns that men bring to therapy. There is and always has been a pressure on men to act like nothing is wrong, to “strongly” move through the world without talking about their issues and needs, and to have high expectations for performance that directly lead to shame and performance anxiety. When beginning sex therapy, you will have the opportunity to openly discuss your sexual health concerns without judgment and shame, but instead to experience an open and curious conversation about your sexuality with an experienced and certified professional to help you discover the sex life that you want for yourself.
How Performance Anxiety Hijacks Sex
Sexual performance anxiety creates a pernicious loop in the brain and body that can be difficult to overcome. When you experience a typical and commonplace sexual health issue, it can be difficult to not overthink it and become hyper-aware of our body, brain, and experience with a critical eye. Think about it like playing sports. The best experiences and results typically result from being “in the zone” and completely present in the process. What performance anxiety causes is for men to get out of their bodies and out of the present, but instead completely into their heads with thoughts like “Is my partner enjoying this or am I ruining this whole thing?” “Am I going hard enough, long enough, strong enough, etc.?” “Am I pleasing my partner? Are they judging me? Am I weak? Am I a failure?” As you can probably tell, those are all unbelievably unhelpful thoughts to have when you are having sex. They are what we call “anti-erotic thoughts,” meaning that they are actively working against you sexually and erotically to prevent you from being present, pleasure-focused, and conscious without being self-conscious. Sex therapy can be a key in breaking those negative habits and thoughts while helping you to more fully embrace the moment with self-consciousness running the show.
WHAT SEX THERAPY WITH MEN LOOKS LIKE
Sex therapy for men covers a wide variety of topics, issues, and concerns because, despite popular opinion, men are not simplistic creatures. Men are nuanced, complicated, and their bodies can be as well. Typical sessions of sex therapy for men focus on open conversations about sexuality and sexual issues with questions and open-ended conversations about sexual history, sexual development, and present-day issues getting in the way of a man’s sexual goals. We will alternate between talking and doing with specific exercises to help you become more attuned with your body and less in your head while helping you to grow your sexual self-awareness, which will help you to better communicate and connect with partners. Perhaps most helpfully, you will be able to step into an environment in which you get the chance to talk openly about your desires, needs, and wants with the guidance to help you determine your own sexual health needs and begin building the sexual life that you want, as opposed to the one that everyone else thinks that you should have.

An INFORMED and EXPERT APPROACH
There is so much shame when talking about sex. It has been ingrained in culture since human beings have been around. What’s okay, what’s not okay, what is sexy, what is not, etc. Unfortunately, that also extends to the therapy world. Despite all of their training, therapists still hold biases and judgments like everyone else. The problem is, when it comes to sexuality, most therapists have almost no training whatsoever in human sexuality. It’s something that therapy programs like to ignore completely, which means most therapists have not had a single class in human sexuality. Despite this, there are many therapists who claim that they are sex therapists who help clients with their sex therapy issues. The scary part is, they are making those claims with no knowledge whatsoever, which can result in more shame, more pressure, and more judgment. Thankfully, I am an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, which is a certification that consists of significant hours of education, training, workshops, and supervision that creates a more informed and expert approach to sex therapy that can avoid common pitfalls that other therapists make when working with sensitive issues in the human experience.
